START Competition 2018

The START (School Teaching Awareness of Randomised Trials) Competition is a competition to celebrate International Clinical Trials Day on 20th May each year. This year the 6th class is running a trial on how you can improve your memory by using various techniques. The 4th class is our clinical trial group and we are experimenting on quickly they can learn a poem by using a memory technique. We are using a 40 line poem, The Children's Hour by Longfellow, as the base of the memory test. We split 4th class into 3 groups, two test groups and one control group, to see which method works the best. Test Group.1. is using videos of the poems on You Tube to help them visually and auditory. Aistear - Vet Week

In Aistear this week we are at the vets. In our socio-dramatic area we have a veterinary clinic set up with children bandaging and performing operations on toy animals. In our construction area we had children building a veterinary hospital with blocks and bricks. We had other students drawing and designing scenes from a veterinary clinic. In our small world we had students creating a village including a vet clinic on our village playmat. Well done boys and girls!


Wordsearch is a fun and challenging game. It looks complicated but it is actually very simple. It is a game for 2 to 4 players. There is a square board in the middle. We insert a round wordsearch card and put the counters in the boxes in the corners. We turn the wordsearch card round to reveal a new word and look for it. The first person to find the word puts his/her colour counters on it. If two words cross each other you put the other counter on the counter of the first word and win more points. I found it a very nice game. One disadvantage is that the wordsearch has to turn a 360 degree circle before the game is finished so the wordsearch has to be upside-down at some point. I would reall
